Vet Skilled in Ovine LAI Wanted

Postby Island Shepherd » Mon Oct 20, 2008 8:40 pm

It seems we have lost yet another vet with the ability to artificially inseminate sheep to the deer industry. It isn't just the timing conflict anymore now some are prohibited by contract.

Does anyone know of a person who is willing to travel, and is proficient with LAI. The closer to the Northeast the better. Anyone at Cornell? Thanks for any info you can provide.

Dave

Dave, check out OC Flock Management at http://www.ocflock.com/englishintro.html

They are sheep people first and foremost. Maine would be close for them, as much of their work is in South America. I think Bill D. knows them.

I meant that Lynn and/or Ileana would think a trip from Alberta to Maine is short, compared to their trips to South America.

Hi Dave,
I have used Martin Dally in 05', 07' & 08' over about 120 ewes total, with good results. Before Martin I used a technician from New Zealand that also worked out well. I would be glad to pass on any other info if you would like. It only took either of these technicians about two minutes to do each ewe - they had each done many ewes (thousands if not tens of thousands) and booth agreed that success rate increases as the time decreases.
Here is his website http://www.toprams.com/ It is best to call him on his cell. Let me know if you can't find the cell #. He is in Oregon but he gets very good air fairs and I feel he is a good value even with the travel. If you get him soon he may be able to work your job into a trip with others in your general area which would reduce your travel cost. He does expect the client to manage the synchronizing of the ewes which is ever so critical as you probably know.
Cheers, Andy McMurry

Geez, just figured out that this thread was started in 2008. Anyhoo, if you are still looking for an LAI tech, I can certainly vouch for Martin Dally. First used him in 2004 and after retiring from UC Davis he bought a place just a few miles from here which certainly simplified my life.
