Re: Center of the Nation Sale featuring NSIP Sheep

BI Could you help me understand the following comments you posted: "People also need to understand that the more performance you breed into your flock, wether that is reproductive or growth, the higher the level of management will be needed to capture that benefit. I think some may have more pe...

Re: Center of the Nation Sale featuring NSIP Sheep

If I were buying a ram, one of the things I would look t is the EBV for Lambing Ease and Lambing Ease of Daughters. These are available on LP, not sure about NSIP. This link will take you to the EBV's on a ram we sold this year, it should show all EBV's available. This is a ram we bred as a lamb, th...

Re: Semen Available

Andy,
Here is the response from the breeder: Hi Paul,
They are woolly at birth, not sure how dense. There are some White Suffolk
studs that lamb their ewes in snow in NSW and they seem to survive ok.
Great to hear the tank arrived safely. Let me know how the progeny go.

Re: Semen Available

Andy,

Semen will run $80-100. Can't narrow it down since I don't have my shipping bill yet, or the bill from my AU handler, GeneMovers.

Re: Semen Available

Andy, Can't answer your question. I will write to the AU to try to find out. Our objective is to produce a white dorper-white suffolk composite ram for western range flocks that improve muscle, longevity while having good growth and wool, so don't have the "hair sheep" stigma. Current suff...

Re: Center of the Nation Sale featuring NSIP Sheep

Duane,

Depends on breed, ewe frame size etc. For a Dorper, 10# is BIG.

Re: Center of the Nation Sale featuring NSIP Sheep

Don,
I understand what you are saying, and most of our buyers will email us a couple of weeks prior to the sale and we send complete info at that time. Since 90% of our buyers are repeat customers, They understand the program.

Semen Available

We now have semen available for two White Suffolk rams from Ida Vale. The tank will arrive tomorrow from AU. I have posted links to their Pedigrees and EBV's below. We also will have a new White Dorper. The WD ram has a -40 EBV for worm egg count. http://sgsearch.sheepgenetics.org.au/Search/Details....

Re: Center of the Nation Sale featuring NSIP Sheep

I don't know about this sale, but MWRS entries are due very early. That is fine for folks that raise sheep for sales and show, but ours are raised out on pasture and not even brought up to evaluate until about 6 weeks (if we are lucky) before the sale. We just don't know what sheep we will bring whe...

Re: High tensile wire question

Don,

Are you using a spinning jenny to unwind the wire? If you are taking it off in coils any kink, even on new wire will break.

Re: Horned genetics?

Mona, Due to the Dorper being developed with the horn dorset as a ram on a persian blackhead ewe, there can be some instances of horns in certain lines. It is inheritable to the male offspring as a sex linked trait. Not sure to what extent the ewes would pass on the trait to male offspring. I would ...

Re: Switching the Flock to Hair Sheep

Pegg, As you have noted from the responses to your post, there are pros and cons to this. We began with Polypays and Suffolks and in the late 80's determined that the cost of shearing 1000 hd of medium wools and the value received did not pay at that time. We worked with Utah State U. on an embryo p...

Re: Link for Feed For sale rams

Darroll, I realize you need to present a good looking animal and compete to place well, but, that does not preclude the use of EBV's as an additional information source. We are finding more and more buyers willing to pay for animals with EBV's. It has taken many years and a lot of training of the bu...
