Re: Success with Stockdogs

What a great opportunity to learn skills needed on the farm/ranch. Sounds like the clinic will be balance of fundamentals as applied to routine practical circumstances. Denice, I live about five states away, or would be there. Hey, will that grant pay for my travel expenses, and for somebody to take...

Re: new working dog wanna be

My border collie, age 12, I've had since a puppy. She is with me virtually every hour of the day, and almost everywhere that allows dogs, and some places that do not. She sleeps nights in a wire crate at the foot of my bed. We get odd sheep and cattle jobs on farms/ranches from time to time. Nothing...

Re: new working dog wanna be

I do not know what the answer is. I see the same indifference to training/learning where I live, and have similar feelings about absence of concern. Eastern Washington (Go Zags!), IMO, is chiefly cattle and wheat country...potatoes as well. Sheep producers, with few exceptions, have small flocks. We...

Thank you for the link. I am impressed with Janet McNally's clear writing style, research and results. That is a great paper. -- TEC

Sheep TeePeeing

Recently I am seeing more literature/videos about teepeeing ewes and lambs for bonding purposes after lambing, and for doctoring. South Dakota, in particular, seems to claim long tradition of field teepeeing sheep. Rodeos and county fairs are reviving an event in which participants compete to teepee...

Re: Coversations? Really??

I have always liked what a flamboyant WWII tank corps commander, Patton, said, "Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity." I believe it applies to dogs, as well. That is a great story. Still remains, how did Meg figure-out fro...

Re: Brag on my young dog

You and Z deserve a good brag. I enjoy reading stories like that. On encountering the rams for the first time, Z may have sensed the, "Yeah, make me" stare, and decided to give them just a little more time/space to think about it. As it turned-out, just the right thing. What I get out of C...

Re: training blog

Thanks Denice. Your suggestions sound good. Will give them a try. I like the idea of using more reminders or corrections, rather than always repeating a slow-down or stop command, over and over again. I agree that a quiet/firm "Josie" or "ahht" will allow her to think about what ...

Re: training blog

I agree, Linda. I learn more from my Josie, than I think she learns from me. It's a collaboration. I know that for the most part she wants to do as I wish, so I sometimes experiment with various ways to communicate, whether by posture, demeanor, and verbal and/or gesture signals. I will always be wo...

Re: training blog

Linda remarked- "Something I admire and don't understand about Cora is that she can apparently adjust the "range" of her "eye". By that I mean that she can sometimes move sheep off from quite a distance -- like when she is fetching sheep in a big pasture. At other times, she...

Re: bold coyotes?

Yeah, the coyote must be at the top of the food chain in that part of the County. It didn't have a concern in the world. -- Tomas

Re: bold coyotes?

As I was driving today, saw a healthy looking coyote casually cut across a wheat stubble field, and rather than avoid the only small hill in the area, it trotted right to the top, when it could have more easily skirted around the rise, and sky-lined itself for anybody (or animal) to see. Coyote was ...

Re: Kangals used to protect goats from Cheetahs

The leader, in the video, simply asked that the government build a couple bridges. He thought the tribe could continue to ford the smaller streams. I hope in the meantime the bridges have been built. Does anybody know whether the migration is still being made? In the sequence crossing the pass in th...
